When it comes to foods for healthy hair and beauty, an overall balanced diet is the way to go. Your diet should consist of lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fatty fish like salmon and low-fat dairy.
There are 10 important foods to include in your diet that will keep your hair healthy.

1. Salmon

The essential omega 3-fatty acids are needed to support scalp health. A deficiency can result in a dry scalp and thus hair, giving it a dull look. If you are a vegetarian, add flax seed to your diet.

2. Dark green vegetables

Spinach and broccoli are excellent sources of vitamins A and C, which your body needs to produce sebum. This oily substance secreted by your hair follicles, is the body’s natural conditioner.

3. Beans

Kidney beans and lentils include protein to promote hair growth. They also include iron, zinc, and biotin. Biotin deficiencies can result in brittle hair.

4. Nuts

Walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid, which is an omega-3 that may help condition your hair.

5. Poultry

Without adequate protein or low quality protein, your hair can become weak and brittle.

6. Eggs

Eggs are the best protein source you can find. They include biotin and vitamin B-12, which are important beauty nutrients.

7. Whole grains

Whole-wheat bread and fortified whole-grain breakfast cereals give your hair a healthy dose of zinc, iron, and B vitamins.

8. Oysters

Oysters include zinc which is a powerful antioxidant. Since oysters are not as common for people to eat on a regular basis, you can also get zinc from beef.

9. Low-fat dairy products

Skim milk and yogurt are great sources of calcium, an important mineral for hair growth.

10. Carrots

Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, which promotes a healthy scalp. A healthy scalp is essential for shiny, well conditioned hair.

Try adding these items to your diet and watch your hair strength, shine and body increase.

Next week, I will talk about how diet can affect your skin and nails.

Greta has a thing for Color! http://modesalon.net/blog/2010/03/greta-has-a-thing-for-color/ http://modesalon.net/blog/2010/03/greta-has-a-thing-for-color/#respond Thu, 04 Mar 2010 18:29:40 +0000 http://modesalon.net/blog/?p=84

Greta Randolph has been working at Mode Salon for several years now. She always greets her Clients with the biggest smile in Indy. We sat down with Greta to get her thoughts on what motivates her to do such great work:

Mode: Why did you decide to get into the Beauty Industry?

Greta: Growing up I always liked to try different things with my hair and makeup. My parents let me try different Colors like Red or Pink lowlights; blonde or brunette; short or long. I had it all! That “Spiked” my interest

Mode: So what do you like most about doing hair now?

Greta: I like doing hair because it makes people feel better. I enjoy putting people in a good mood and for a lot of women and men, getting their hair done is the answer for that!

Mode: What do you do in your downtime?

Greta: I enjoy spending time with my family; going to Cincinnati to visit my boyfriend and go out with my friends. I love Broadripple!

Mode: What would you like us to know that might surprise us?

Greta: I love to do “Boy Stuff”. My favorite activity is to go fishing with my Dad. And YES, I bait my own line and take the fish off! I also love water sports such as swimming, water skiing and tubing.

Mode: What beauty advice do you have?

Greta: Work with what you have and get to love that…and if you don’t like something, then do something to enhance your features like highlights, color or even hair extensions.

Greta does great skin care, facials and pedicures as well. You can catch her most days at Mode Salon.

For Rhonda, Beauty is a State of Mind http://modesalon.net/blog/2010/03/for-rhonda-beauty-is-a-state-of-mind/ http://modesalon.net/blog/2010/03/for-rhonda-beauty-is-a-state-of-mind/#respond Thu, 04 Mar 2010 18:08:50 +0000 http://modesalon.net/blog/?p=78

Foils anyone?

To say Rhonda Hayes can do hair is an understatement. But Mode Salon’s award-winning Stylist from New York City cares as much about the lives of her Clients as she does about their hair style. An individual Tour de Force, spending time in Rhonda’s chair is an experience. We caught up with her for this short interview.

Mode: What made you get into doing hair?

Rhonda: At a very early age, I was fascinated by the art of styling hair. It was very easy for me to comprehend and I felt very comfortable and natural doing it. I also love people.

Mode: So what do you like the most about it?

Rhonda:

  1. How creative I can be
  2. How flexible and unpredictable the job is
  3. The smile on my Client’s face when I do an awesome job
  4. And last but not least… The different people I come in contact with everyday is exciting

Mode: So what do you do to get away from all the excitement?

Rhonda: I watch a lot of TV! Everything and anything! Or I go shopping with my two beautiful children.

Mode: What don’t we know about you?

Rhonda: When I lived in Grenada in the West Indies, I taught Preschool before moving to America. I was also a Pageant Girl!

Mode: What beauty advice do you have?

Rhonda: Love yourself and try to live a stress free life. Your body and total image will reflect it.

Rhonda can be seen most days at Mode Salon. Our advice? Book early and book often!

The long and short about Hair Extensions http://modesalon.net/blog/2010/02/the-long-and-short-about-hair-extensions/ http://modesalon.net/blog/2010/02/the-long-and-short-about-hair-extensions/#respond Wed, 10 Feb 2010 18:05:24 +0000 http://modesalon.net/blog/?p=70 With the Awards Season past, we look back at all the Starlets on the Red Carpet and behind the Microphones and ask ourselves….Was that her hair? Well, yes it was… in a manner of speaking…

You will find that the majority of aspiring and established stars at one point in their lives have donned Hair Extensions. Just think about it…how fast do you think they can get ready for their next big role? After all, hair only grows 1/2 inch per month. You can make your hair look longer by using tricks like wearing a Turtleneck….but who wants to wear one of those everyday!

The real trick is Hair Extensions. They are as commonplace enough in contemporary society today that they should be considered as a choice in the modern woman’s wardrobe. But just like any fashion, there are guidelines to know to get the best results. Here are a few:

First: A common misconception: Hair Extensions use real hair. There is a place for “non-real” hair in the beauty industry, but its primary use is for braiding not extensions. So, is it real? Yeah, it’s real.

Second: Price = Quality. There ARE different grades of hair used for extensions. Make sure your Stylist is offering you the best choices to choose from. Better hair will wear better and keep up better…it will also look more natural, which in this “On-Stage” world is the proof in the pudding!

Third: Your Stylists skill level and Technique will make all the difference in the world in how long and how natural your Extensions look. Make sure He or She has years of experience. There are times for experimenting and shopping for the lowest price, this is not one of them.

Fourth: It seems like a new Technique is invented every year to do Hair Extensions. They come down to 3 main branches of techniques: Gluing or Bonding, Weaving and Fusion. Glue in Hair should only be used in a pinch for special occasions, since it will come out the first time you wash it. Weaving techniques generally last up to 2 months with regular maintenance while Fusion techniques can last up to 6 months. Not all techniques can be used with all hair types, so again, make sure you ask your Stylist before committing.

Fifth: Like most things, Hair Extensions will need maintenance. Some form of periodic tightening might be necessary or for longer applications, simply maintaining consistency of color between your hair and the extensions will be required. Proper maintenance can also help prevent avoidable problems such as hair breakage.

Lucky for you, Our Master Stylist Rhonda has done Hair Extensions at Mode for many years and developed her skill set as a Stylist in New York City. She has done work for Business Women and On-Air Personalities alike using the So.Cap Fusion Method as well as traditional Weaving. If you are looking for true expertise, give Mode Salon a call and set up a consultation. You will be glad you did.

No matter what goals you aim to achieve with Hair Extensions, be it giving your hair a break from chemicals, going low maintenance in the summer, giving your hair a chance to grow without stress breakage or just going Glam on your own Red Carpet, get the facts about Hair Extensions, and go for it!

Stop Thinning Hair http://modesalon.net/blog/2009/10/stop-thinning-hair/ http://modesalon.net/blog/2009/10/stop-thinning-hair/#respond Mon, 05 Oct 2009 15:51:09 +0000 http://modesalon.net/blog/?p=35 Our Clients ask us all the time, “What can I do to stop my hair from thinning?” Thinning hair affects both Men and Women and for years the only solutions involved rather harsh chemicals with potential side effects. The ultimate solution was to go for Hair Replacement Techniques which could be “semi-surgical” and also quite costly. There has also always been the stigma and suspicion that most solutions are not effective. Well as they say the times are a changing.

We have just brought a new affordable product to Mode Salon by Joico called Clinicure. It is a multi step treatment process which begins in the Salon and includes take home treatments. Clinical studies found that 85% of people using the product were satisfied with their results after just one week. Clinicure makes different varieties of the product for both natural and chemically treated hair. You can read about it all and watch a video at the Clinicure Website. Give us a call to start your program today and start seeing your hair become fuller and much easier to style and manage.

Dry hair got you down? http://modesalon.net/blog/2009/09/dry-hair-got-you-down/ http://modesalon.net/blog/2009/09/dry-hair-got-you-down/#respond Fri, 25 Sep 2009 05:27:59 +0000 http://modesalon.net/blog/?p=57 It’s amazing to me how many times people ask me how to fix their “dry hair”.

Well, to start off, there are many factors that can lead up to that evil dryness and annoying frizzy fly-aways.

The number one leading factor is poor hair care.  Ladies, it’s a fact.  Coming to the salon twice a year isn’t going to help your hair stay healthy.  For haircuts, we recommend coming back 6-10 weeks for your next visit.  Regular salon visits will help maintain your mane and keep it looking healthy and beautiful.

Excessively washing your hair with poor shampoo is a major factor in dryness.  Get a professional shampoo designed for your hair type.  Mode Salon is proud to carry L’OREAL PROFESSIONELL , which has 9 different shampoos and conditioners fit for your hair. This includes highlighted, colored, dry, frizzy or flat hair.

Heat with a blow dryer and flat iron without protectors also doesn’t help this issue. That’s why here at Modé Salon we encourage product, product, product!  Before blow drying, use a leave-in conditioner such as BED HEAD EGO BOOST to protect your hair from the heat, and to help smooth frizzy locks. And before using any type of hot flat iron or curling iron, try ROCKAHOLIC ROCK OUT SHINE BLASTER to protect your hair from the intense heat of any iron. This will also help smooth fly-aways and give it an illuminating shine.

So stop by Modé Salon and check out our awesome product lines, and talk with a stylist to see which shampoos, conditioners, and products best fit your hair type.  We would love to help you, and of course see you as well!
