Spring in Indy, Remember?

Ha!  We thought so much.  Seems as though this is the year of Winter’s revenge.  I know we’ve seen enough.  School closings, shifting schedules and now, POT HOLES!  One swallowed Rhonda’s car last week so Mr. Firestone will be seeing us soon.

Seems as thought the only solace is “what goes around comes around”.  The Polar Vortex has taken no prisoners this year, and even Florida and California are feeling it.  But again, we just see that as higher food prices!

So what can you do?  You can start getting ready for Spring anyway.  Here are a few suggestions before Spring Fever hits and we forget all of our winter woes.

  • Start Spring cleaning now.  Yes like you I am tired of wearing that same sweater over and over again.  It’s time to bag it up with the rest of your unused or overused stuff and get set to move it out.  You’ll feel better.
  • Make a list NOW of all the projects you want to do.  Create your task list and start clipping inspirational ideas to help get you motivated.  When Spring hits, if you are not ready, you could easily lose a month of progress if you are not prepared.
  • Join a gym if you have not already.  This winter has been particularly rough physically.  Two months flew by.  Time to get your summer act together.
  • Change something about yourself.  Change your hair length or color.  Change your nail polish.  Do something that gives you a strong sense of creativity and control.
  • Take care of yourself.  Time to put down the “comfort food” and slim down your diet.  De-stress with a massage or pedicure.  Put the phone down and go out for a “real” laugh.  “Lol’s” don’t burn calories.

Mother Nature was not very gentle this Winter, but you can do a few things to help you recover and forget her unkindness.  Try a few of these ideas out and let us know how it went.  In the meantime, be of good cheer.  Warmer days are ahead!

What we like about Fall http://modesalon.net/blog/2013/10/what-we-like-about-fall/ http://modesalon.net/blog/2013/10/what-we-like-about-fall/#respond Fri, 18 Oct 2013 13:52:40 +0000 http://modesalon.net/blog/?p=777 dreamstimefree_38377

The Seasons come, the seasons go.  The long Winters we try to forget.  Spring is but a gentle breeze marking the awakening of nature and Summer whisks along at such a lazy pace that we wished it would never end.

Then there is the Fall.  Fall is at once cold and colorful.  Where high fashion meets practicality and the renewed sense of urgency returns to the air.  Some take the opportunity to renew friendships at the stadium tailgate while others relish in playing dress up on a chilly October day.  Beyond these seasonal favorites, how do you spend your Fall days?  If you have become stumped, try a few of these for thought starters:

  • Fall is a great time for personal reflection
  • The first quiet time after the kids go back to school
  • A time to learn new things
  • A time to start new things which might have long term consequence
  • A time to begin taking better care of yourself again

We encourage you to try a few of these on and see if they fit.  As well, let us highlight the fact that you need to take care of yourself ALL year long.  You know the story here:  Some things are easier to gain than they are to lose.  This also applies to damaged hair roots, overly dry skin, caloused feet, spent muscles… you know the story.

I think our Stylist Danyelle Feist-Simon expressed this best the other day, ” Think about taking only ONE hour out of the month for just YOU, Stop into Mode Salon and Day Spa, have a glass of wine with a pedicure, manicure, facial or massage.  Let the staff at Mode take care or you!  Keep calm and let Mode carry you on”

So there you have it.  Take some time out for yourself this season.  Relax and have some fun.  We look forward to helping you on your journey.

Control the Frizz http://modesalon.net/blog/2011/08/control-the-frizz/ http://modesalon.net/blog/2011/08/control-the-frizz/#respond Tue, 02 Aug 2011 05:25:54 +0000 http://modesalon.net/blog/?p=361 Do you ever feel like the weather is beating you in the hair battle against frizz?  Well don’t worry because I am here to help you fight back.  When it comes to products that can put moisture back in your hair you need to always remember to watch how much you use because you could go from frizz to an oil slick!

Products that are more of an oil versus a product and are sprays can always be your best bet.  The products you see that are a spray and heat protectant can have alcohol in it, and that can be one thing that can do more damage than protecting.  A product that I would highly recommend is Agadir Argan Oil, available at Mode Salon.  This product will add shine and protect your hair’s true integrity.  But remember to watch how much you put in your hair.  If you have fine hair you will want to use a dime size or less.  With medium to thick hair you can use anything from a nickle size to a quarter size in your hair.  The only other thing you must watch when using this product is to make sure you don’t put too much in your root area as it could get too oily.  Focus mainly on your mid length to ends. You can use this product on your hair wet or dry.  It will protect it from the heat and help your fly-aways.  And remember you can use your straight iron to soften and smooth your hair out when taking on the warmer weather.

Another way to help fight against the dry frizz look is to know you don’t have to wash your hair everyday if you feel you can.  Your natural oil that your body produces is good for your hair.   For some people washing your hair every day can dry your hair more.  And if you feel you can’t make it more than every other day washing then that is okay as well.  When you do feel like washing try to use a shampoo and conditioner that is hydrating at least once to twice a week.  This will condition your hair to a healthy state that you will be loving.

My last tip for you to keep your hair healthy and frizz free is to really try to avoid the products with alcohol in them. They might say they are a heat protectant but can sometimes make your hair feel dry and damaged.  Also know that you shouldn’t use hairspray when straightening your hair.  If you think about it, hairspray makes your hair stiff and hold it’s shape.  That is fine when you are done styling but not before.

So get out and enjoy the warm weather and don’t let the frizzies get you down.

Spring hair fashion continued http://modesalon.net/blog/2011/05/spring-hair-fashion-continued/ http://modesalon.net/blog/2011/05/spring-hair-fashion-continued/#respond Tue, 24 May 2011 19:27:31 +0000 http://modesalon.net/blog/?p=119 As summer approaches you see more girls going from sleek and straight to soft and wavy. The bohemian look is always fresh and a fun look that can be worn just about any way. Accessories can always be fun when it comes to your hair, but accessorizing with your hair can make your look so much more fun and exciting.

I will be talking you through two more looks that will have you ready for this summer. They can be worn together or separate depending on the look you are going for that day. Our first look will be the beach waves. With this look you will be ready to go outside for any activity or a fun date with the guy you like:

  1. You will need a 1″ flat iron
  2. Section your hair so it’s easier to work with your iron.
  3. Take 1″ sections or smaller (otherwise this won’t work) and your flat iron. Starting at the root twist around your iron until a light wave forms.

    Flat Iron sections

  4. Continue throughout until all your hair is done.
  5. When finished run your fingers through. If too curly quickly run your iron through to soften. Then spray some gel over your hair and you are ready to rock the town.

    Wavy look

Waves from the back

Now that you have your waves, how about we accessorize with your hair braided in a headband. It is a look that will have heads turning. You will never have to buy a headband again once you get this look down:

  1. First you will need to decide where your starting point will be and how thick your braid will be.
  2. Once you have your braid where you want separate into three pieces and crisscross over each other.
  3. Then choosing which outside piece to start with grab some hair and cross it over the middle piece.
  4. Continue throughout until you have your braid at your desired place. Take a couple bobby pins and crisscross over one another and you have one of the coolest headbands around

    Headband

Now that you have your waves and headband you can hit the town shopping, go to the pool, or even out on a picnic. You will be looking like a model right out of this summer’s fashion magazines and making the town your runway.

Ready to go out!

Fresh Hair looks for the Spring http://modesalon.net/blog/2011/04/fresh-hair-looks-for-the-spring/ http://modesalon.net/blog/2011/04/fresh-hair-looks-for-the-spring/#respond Wed, 20 Apr 2011 19:02:05 +0000 http://modesalon.net/blog/?p=104
Each season we look in magazines, on T.V., on the internet to see what the hair trends are for that season. Celebrities are most widely followed to see what they are wearing or what they are doing. This year you will notice the trend with hair is inspired by the 60′s and 70′s. From the Mia Farrow cut, to soft waves and everything in between is easy and fun for everyone.
If you are someone who likes the look of soft waves that move with you or a fun pony then these two looks are for you. The first look is for those of you who want to feel as though you are about to walk the red carpet. Feel glamorous all the way with theses soft waves:
  1. If your hair is past your shoulders you will want to use a 1″ iron. shoulder length should be 3/4″.
  2. Take 1″ pieces and curl end to root.
  3. Set each curl with a clip and spray.
  4. Once all your hair is all curled let it cool.
  5. Take down and spray then take a paddle brush and brush out gently.
Now you are ready to hit the town for any occasion. Our next look can be done two ways. We can do sleek and elegant or fun and playful. I’m talking about the ponytail. We will transition from one look to the other with ease and you will be doing them all the time. Our look is the ponytail:
  1. This look is the side pony and you will need to make sure your hair is nice and smooth.
  2. Choose your desired side and smoothly pull your hair to that side.
  3. You can use a flat-iron or a small curling iron to curl you pony taking small pieces.
  4. Once all curled take a comb or brush and tease for flare.
The next look is one you can transition to from a fun pony. This is the sleek and elegant high pony.
  1. You will want to smooth out your hair with a flat-iron.
  2. Once you have your hair straight determine how high or low you want your pony. Start to smooth your hair and put it up at the desired point.
  3. Take a piece of hair from the bottom side of your ponytail and wrap it around the hair tie to cover. Then take a bobby pin and lock the hair in place.
  4. Go through and smooth the pony one last time and spray and you are ready to go and enjoy your night out on the town.
I hope you enjoy these few looks and remember to have fun with them. Hair is meant to be played with and always stay creative.

A healthy diet can do wonders for your hair http://modesalon.net/blog/2011/04/a-healthy-diet-can-do-wonders-for-your-hair/ http://modesalon.net/blog/2011/04/a-healthy-diet-can-do-wonders-for-your-hair/#respond Mon, 11 Apr 2011 18:52:47 +0000 http://modesalon.net/blog/?p=99 For healthy shiny hair, its not just what you put on your hair, but its what you put in your body too that counts. When it comes to foods for healthy hair and beauty, an overall balanced diet is the way to go. Your diet should consist of lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fatty fish like salmon and low-fat dairy.
There are 10 important foods to include in your diet that will keep your hair healthy.

1. Salmon

The essential omega 3-fatty acids are needed to support scalp health. A deficiency can result in a dry scalp and thus hair, giving it a dull look. If you are a vegetarian, add flax seed to your diet.

2. Dark green vegetables

Spinach and broccoli are excellent sources of vitamins A and C, which your body needs to produce sebum. This oily substance secreted by your hair follicles, is the body’s natural conditioner.

3. Beans

Kidney beans and lentils include protein to promote hair growth. They also include iron, zinc, and biotin. Biotin deficiencies can result in brittle hair.

4. Nuts

Walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid, which is an omega-3 that may help condition your hair.

5. Poultry

Without adequate protein or low quality protein, your hair can become weak and brittle.

6. Eggs

Eggs are the best protein source you can find. They include biotin and vitamin B-12, which are important beauty nutrients.

7. Whole grains

Whole-wheat bread and fortified whole-grain breakfast cereals give your hair a healthy dose of zinc, iron, and B vitamins.

8. Oysters

Oysters include zinc which is a powerful antioxidant. Since oysters are not as common for people to eat on a regular basis, you can also get zinc from beef.

9. Low-fat dairy products

Skim milk and yogurt are great sources of calcium, an important mineral for hair growth.

10. Carrots

Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, which promotes a healthy scalp. A healthy scalp is essential for shiny, well conditioned hair.

Try adding these items to your diet and watch your hair strength, shine and body increase.

Next week, I will talk about how diet can affect your skin and nails.

The long and short about Hair Extensions http://modesalon.net/blog/2010/02/the-long-and-short-about-hair-extensions/ http://modesalon.net/blog/2010/02/the-long-and-short-about-hair-extensions/#respond Wed, 10 Feb 2010 18:05:24 +0000 http://modesalon.net/blog/?p=70 With the Awards Season past, we look back at all the Starlets on the Red Carpet and behind the Microphones and ask ourselves….Was that her hair? Well, yes it was… in a manner of speaking…

You will find that the majority of aspiring and established stars at one point in their lives have donned Hair Extensions. Just think about it…how fast do you think they can get ready for their next big role? After all, hair only grows 1/2 inch per month. You can make your hair look longer by using tricks like wearing a Turtleneck….but who wants to wear one of those everyday!

The real trick is Hair Extensions. They are as commonplace enough in contemporary society today that they should be considered as a choice in the modern woman’s wardrobe. But just like any fashion, there are guidelines to know to get the best results. Here are a few:

First: A common misconception: Hair Extensions use real hair. There is a place for “non-real” hair in the beauty industry, but its primary use is for braiding not extensions. So, is it real? Yeah, it’s real.

Second: Price = Quality. There ARE different grades of hair used for extensions. Make sure your Stylist is offering you the best choices to choose from. Better hair will wear better and keep up better…it will also look more natural, which in this “On-Stage” world is the proof in the pudding!

Third: Your Stylists skill level and Technique will make all the difference in the world in how long and how natural your Extensions look. Make sure He or She has years of experience. There are times for experimenting and shopping for the lowest price, this is not one of them.

Fourth: It seems like a new Technique is invented every year to do Hair Extensions. They come down to 3 main branches of techniques: Gluing or Bonding, Weaving and Fusion. Glue in Hair should only be used in a pinch for special occasions, since it will come out the first time you wash it. Weaving techniques generally last up to 2 months with regular maintenance while Fusion techniques can last up to 6 months. Not all techniques can be used with all hair types, so again, make sure you ask your Stylist before committing.

Fifth: Like most things, Hair Extensions will need maintenance. Some form of periodic tightening might be necessary or for longer applications, simply maintaining consistency of color between your hair and the extensions will be required. Proper maintenance can also help prevent avoidable problems such as hair breakage.

Lucky for you, Our Master Stylist Rhonda has done Hair Extensions at Mode for many years and developed her skill set as a Stylist in New York City. She has done work for Business Women and On-Air Personalities alike using the So.Cap Fusion Method as well as traditional Weaving. If you are looking for true expertise, give Mode Salon a call and set up a consultation. You will be glad you did.

No matter what goals you aim to achieve with Hair Extensions, be it giving your hair a break from chemicals, going low maintenance in the summer, giving your hair a chance to grow without stress breakage or just going Glam on your own Red Carpet, get the facts about Hair Extensions, and go for it!
