Ok …so you might have heard by now that May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.  I hope you are not yawning!  If you are…GET UP!!  This is a great month to re-dedicate yourself to those New Year’s Resolutions you made to lose weight, get active and get in better shape.  The recommendations are 60 minutes per day for children and a minimum of 30 minutes a day for adults.

I know I know…. it’s HARD you say.  But I recommend you treat it like a game.  Hey, if it’s not fun, you probably will find something else to do, right?  So here is a fun way to 1)  Get fit  2)  Enjoy the weather and 3)  Have a few laughs.

HULA HOOP!

The humble Hula Hoop has been around for ages, and even though it is fun, it’s serious gear for a fun workout.

My 3 and 4 year old asked me a couple of weeks ago if I could Hula Hoop.  They laughed at me  and said “No way Daddy”.  We don’t believe you”.  I got a hold of one and the family could not stop laughing when I showed them how it was done!

What made you want to get into the beauty industry?

It’s an industry with endless opportunities to better your skills as a stylist! There is ALWAYS something new to learn and I’m the type of person who can’t learn enough about fashion, makeup, hair, nails!

What do you like best about being a Stylist?

I really enjoy keeping up on all the latest trends and styles and helping other people achieve those looks through my work.

What do you see as upcoming trends this year?

Lately I’ve noticed a lot of  bright colors, bold prints on clothes! Retro is definitely coming back as far as hair goes big curls, bangs on both men and women!  I’ve noticed a lot of women are rocking the bright red and pink lipsticks which is one of my personal favorite new trends.  Nails are becoming a big trend as well.  With so many different things you are able to do with them now!  I absolutely love the grunge sheik look that is becoming popular.  Because you can dress it up or down and still look trendy without looking gaudy.

What do you like to do when you are not at the Salon?

When I’m not at the salon I enjoy hanging out with my friends and family. I also love practicing with my roller derby team, Circle City Derby Girls!  And I love shopping, watching reality TV shows, and reading!

What advice do you have for your clients to help them achieve their unique look?

My advice would be find something that really accentuates all of your best features, but also a look that makes you feel confident!

This Friday, Rhonda Hayes and Mode Salon were part of the team doing Hair at the annual Off the Field NFL Player’s Wives Association Luncheon and Fashion Show held at Sak’s Fifth Avenue Indianapolis as part of the 2012 Superbowl.  This is a gala event held every year in each hosting city.  What an affair!  New York Giants, New England Patriots, and Indianapolis Colts wives and players were to be seen everywhere!   Indy is a great place to throw a party.   Everyone looked marvelous!

I recently made a trip to New York to check out the fashion scene.  Buckle up!  This is what I found:

The new trend is Feathers:  Feathers on clothes, shoes, jewelry.  Anywhere you can apply a Hint of Color, Feathers are the way to go.

Long beautiful earrings, chunky cultured necklaces, hand cuff bracelets, pearls Pearls, PEARLS…shiny, simple, natural or gaudy.  All will do.

Color – lots of deep rich dynamic colors are in.  Burnt red-orange, Indigo blue, yellow, smokey grey, Jet black and more.  Color blocking is also creative and it’s back – different shades of color from the same family on the same skirt of blouse.

Scarfs, swags, capes, crop sweaters are in. layer, Layer, LAYER:  Nice sweater fabric on the outside, silk or shim-ice blouse on the inside.  The more the merrier.

Skinny jeans and lots of leggings are still in.  The fancier the better.  The glitz and glamor ones are more dressy:  Like orange, gold, green, electric blue, army green and indigo denim.  These are very easy to do.  Buy a pair of plain leggings, go to the fabric store and pick up some accessories such as buttons, eyelets, lace, cords, diamonds and put them on the leggings.  A little bling goes a long way.

Bags and shoes – Tall fitted, riders style with buckles and zippers.  Brown and natural or black leather.  Different color shoes are in:  nude, shiny or patent leather black, purple, blue.  Rainbow colors are in, the more the better.  If you can’t swing the heels, just get something comfortable for you.

I know   Lots of options!!  Just go for it and pick the style that’s suitable for you!

Do you ever feel like the weather is beating you in the hair battle against frizz?  Well don’t worry because I am here to help you fight back.  When it comes to products that can put moisture back in your hair you need to always remember to watch how much you use because you could go from frizz to an oil slick!

Products that are more of an oil versus a product and are sprays can always be your best bet.  The products you see that are a spray and heat protectant can have alcohol in it, and that can be one thing that can do more damage than protecting.  A product that I would highly recommend is Agadir Argan Oil, available at Mode Salon.  This product will add shine and protect your hair’s true integrity.  But remember to watch how much you put in your hair.  If you have fine hair you will want to use a dime size or less.  With medium to thick hair you can use anything from a nickle size to a quarter size in your hair.  The only other thing you must watch when using this product is to make sure you don’t put too much in your root area as it could get too oily.  Focus mainly on your mid length to ends. You can use this product on your hair wet or dry.  It will protect it from the heat and help your fly-aways.  And remember you can use your straight iron to soften and smooth your hair out when taking on the warmer weather.

Another way to help fight against the dry frizz look is to know you don’t have to wash your hair everyday if you feel you can.  Your natural oil that your body produces is good for your hair.   For some people washing your hair every day can dry your hair more.  And if you feel you can’t make it more than every other day washing then that is okay as well.  When you do feel like washing try to use a shampoo and conditioner that is hydrating at least once to twice a week.  This will condition your hair to a healthy state that you will be loving.

My last tip for you to keep your hair healthy and frizz free is to really try to avoid the products with alcohol in them. They might say they are a heat protectant but can sometimes make your hair feel dry and damaged.  Also know that you shouldn’t use hairspray when straightening your hair.  If you think about it, hairspray makes your hair stiff and hold it’s shape.  That is fine when you are done styling but not before.

So get out and enjoy the warm weather and don’t let the frizzies get you down.

Ladies it’s here, wedding season is upon us. Every detail is important and the one detail you shouldn’t have to worry about is your hair. To most you wonder what do I want for my wedding. Well look no further as I am here to help you figure that out before your big day.

I have spent much of my time looking to see what looks brides and bridesmaids are choosing. This is the season to be romantic and keep your look simple and gorgeous.

I look around and I see most brides with a romantic look of body and soft curls. With this look you can add a piece of sparkle and wow your guests and husband to be with. You can keep the look romantic with it up as well.

Wearing your hair up on your wedding day is a look that most brides choose for their wedding day. This is a look that can be romantic and still keep the focus on your dress. With an up-do you can play with any look. With soft curls pinned up and texture your look can be fun and playful, or beautiful and romantic.
